Built for the 1889 World's Fair and standing 330 metres tall, the Eiffel Tower dominates the Parisian skyline and was the tallest structure in the world for over forty years. Initially described by leading artists and architectural critics as "monstrous... ridiculous... barbaric... terrible", the French and the rest of the world soon fell in love with this graceful tower and the spectacular views it offers of the City of Lights. The two lower public floors house restaurants, while the top floor is home to an observation deck. Above it, M. Eiffel maintained a private apartment for many years. Today, the Eiffel Tower is the most visited paid monument in the world, with around 6 million visitors a year.
